I am nervous about working, can I request a layoff?

Yes. However the company to effect a lay-off will be based on operational needs, the CBA and applicable law.

I am an hourly associate and if I am laid off, do I lose my seniority?

Not if it is a temporary lay-off pursuant to either or both of the CBA and applicable law.

If I’m laid off can I return to work?

Yes, temporary lay-offs presume a recall to work.

If I’m laid off do my Benefits continue? 

Yes, benefits will continue for temporary laid off associates. The associate will be invoiced monthly for the employee portion and is responsible for making regular payments to keep the benefits current.

If so, for how long?

For as long as you maintain an “active” employment status.

How do I complete my Leave Form? 

Your local HR will assist with documentation.

Can I override the CBA and provide associates with temporary hours at another location?

Most likely not however issues related to the CBA should be addressed with your HR Director.

I am nervous about coming into my location and working, can I request leave?  If so, will it be paid or unpaid? 

Yes, you can certainly request leave. The granting of the leave will depend on either or both of the CBA and applicable provincial law. It will most likely be unpaid but this needs to be addressed with your local HR on a case to case province-to province.

If yes, how many days?

Same as above.

What if schools or care facilities close and an associate doesn’t have access to dependent care and he/she is hourly and leave is requested? 

Yes. The associate can request a leave, leaves will be granted on a case by case basis in accordance with the collective agreement and or applicable law. Consult your HR Director for further details.

If the associate doesn’t have paid leave available, can he/she take unpaid leave? 

Yes.

If an associate takes leave, how long is the associates’ job protected?

This will vary depending on the wording of your local collective agreement and the applicable law. Consult with your local HR. Surely if the leave is temporary HMSHost will make every effort to protect the associates’ job.

If a member of the Operations senior management team gets confirmation that he/she has COVID-19 after having spending time with other associates does the quarantine extend to those the associates, he/she was in contact with? 

Yes. Self Quarantine 14 days. Options for salary continuance:  technology device to VPN remotely – considered “at work” otherwise can use vacation accrual or sick time.

What is the contingency plan if airport senior management is quarantined?

Outside leadership: VPO, HRD, Business Controller, Admin, Loss Prevention, Talent Manager will be the point contact and dispatched to the site. Organize an In-Charge group made of Shift Leaders, front line associates to be empowered with daily operational requirements.

If a passenger is diagnosed days after dining in one of our restaurants, and we find out the day and time, do we quarantine all associates present in the restaurant at that time?

Inform Josie Cancilla, HRD immediately for escalation.

If an associate calls-in or informs a manager that he/she believes they have COVID-19 (Coronavirus) or have been exposed to COVID-19, what should we tell the associate?

The CDC recommends that if an associate is sick or believes they have the virus, the associate should say home, self-quarantine for 14 days and contact their health care provider.

If an associate is confirmed with the COVID-19, who should we notify, i.e. landlord, other associates, etc.?

Do not notify anyone, the information is considered Protected Health Information.   Physicians and medical facilities are required to report confirmed cases to the local health department/CDC.   The Health Department will follow up with the individual and contact their employer if the test is positive and will provide further recommendations.  Please email coronavirus@hmshost.com  for all positive results.

Who do I contact if I have questions about COVID-19?

Send an email to coronavirus@hmshost.com. This email is monitored by multiple individuals on the COVID-19 Communication Team; you will receive a timely response.

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

  • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
  • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

Can someone spread the virus without being sick?

People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest). Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

What is the difference between the Coronavirus and COVID-19?

The Coronavirus is a series of viruses related to severe acute respiratory syndrome. The World Health Organization recently renamed the Coronavirus to COVID-19 the specific virus related to this outbreak.

What is 2019 Novel Coronavirus?

This is the original name of the virus that was that was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province.
